2009 Fall Camporee!!
The 2009 Fall Camporee will be at the Shawnee Riverfront Park on 10/9-10/11. Troop 494 will be hosting the Iron Chef competition during the camp out. Other planned activities include Emergency Preparedness and a Ham Radio merit badges.

Draw for the 2010 Summer Camp is coming up quickly! If you plan to attend 2010 Summer Camp, please see Dan Schade at the October 5th troop meeting to pay your initial fee of $40.

Welcome to Troop 494's Webpage. Come learn more about Troop 494 in Olathe, Kansas and about the scouting program. We are a very active troop that campouts every month and do activities such as spelunking, canoeing, and skiing. Come join us and learn more about us.

We meet every Monday night at 7:00 p.m at St. Paul's Catholic Church in the basement. St. Paul's is located at 900 S Honeysuckle Dr. Olathe, KS 66061. For driving directions click here.

You Will need to buy:

•Class A Shirt

•Troop Numbers

•Boy Scout Handbook

•Shoulder Loops

•Council Patch

Optional

•Scout Shorts/Pants

•Scout Belt

•Neckerchief Slide

•Scout Socks

The Troop will provide the neckerchief and patch. Also, all awards that the Boys earn will be payed for by the troop.

Structure of our Troop

Troop 494 is a boy-run Troop. The new scouts will be put into a patrol with approximately 8 other new scouts. The patrol elects its Patrol Leader and Asst. Patrol Leader on a yearly basis. The Patrol Leader is completely responsible for his Patrol. He must keep them informed of events and represents his patrol in the monthly Patrol Leaders Council meeting.

Yearly the Scouts elect a Senior Patrol Leader who will “run” the whole troop. The Senior Patrol Leader appoints several assistants to help him during his term. The Senior Patrol Leader, with the assistance of the Scoutmaster, assigns all other positions of responsibility such as Bugler, Historian, Chaplain’s Aide, Den Chief, and Scribe, etc.

Uniform Guide

Scouts in Troop 494 are expected to wear a Class A uniform to meetings during the school year and anytime the troop travels as a unit. This includes to and from campouts and other activities. In order to keep your uniform up-to-date, please reference the BSA uniform guide which is available as a pdf file located here.

Why Cross Over into Boy Scouting

Men who were Scouts for five or more years as boys are more likely than men with no Scouting experience to:

·Graduate from High School( 98% vs. 83%)

·Graduate from College (40% vs. 16%)

·Earn annual household incomes of $50,000+ (33% vs. 17%)

·To be listed in Who’s Who of America (70% vs. 51%)

·Put the needs of others before themselves

·Make the most honest, not the easiest, decisions

•The yearly registration fees for both Scouts and Adults are due after the Cub Scouts cross over into Boy Scouting. The yearly fees are:

–1st Year Scout--$60 (includes Boy’s Life magazine subscription and a $10.00 charge for the Troop neckerchief and patch)

–2nd year scout and above--$50 (includes Boy’s Life magazine subscription)

–Adults--$10

•Again we want to stress that the Boys will be given the opportunity to earn their own way. They can do this by helping out with service projects that are scheduled throughout the year

DEPARTURE

When: Saturday, July 9, 2007. Registration starts at 8:00 AM and ends at 8:45 AM- We will depart for summer Camp at 9:00 AM sharp.

Where: St. Paul's Church -Registration will be in the Church Basement. Gear will be checked-in at the parking lot.

What To Bring: Medication- All medication must be checked in with our Adult First Aider and will be dispensed to the scout as instructed. If your scout needs to take any non-prescription medication you must include a note giving us permission and dosage. All prescription medications normally have dosage directions on the bottle. If yours doesn't, we will need written permission and dosage instructions. Since we are not doctors, we can not prescribe any medication for your scout (i.e. aspirin etc...), so if he will need these you must supply then with a written permission slip and dosage. ALL MEDICATIONS MUST BE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINERS!

Keys -Be sure to turn in an extra key or copy of the combination for your scout's camp box.

Spending Money -Spending money should be checked in to the Troop Bank. The Troop Bank is opened after each meal for scouts to withdraw spending money. Scouts should not keep their spending money in their pockets or camp boxes. It will get lost or stolen. Please do not give your scout anything larger than five dollar bills.

Lunch – We will be stopping in Clinton, Missouri for lunch, so they will need money for lunch. Do not put his lunch money in the bank. We will probably gather the money during registration.

Uniform -Scouts should be in class “A” uniform for travel.

RETURN

When: Monday, July 18, 2007 at 12:00 PM.

Where: St. Paul's Church

Checkout: When picking up your scout, please be sure to close your scout's Troop Bank account and retrieve his medication.

Canoeing

We are heading out to Neese's Farm to go canoeing! Everyone who has not earned the canoeing merit badge will ge the opportunity to get it. We will also the opportunity to do a little fishing, so bring your fishing poles.

Wolf Creek Merit Badge Forum

On March 24 we will be traveling to Wolf Creek power plant. The staff there are offering merit badges to Boy Scouts. It is rare that they decide to do this so we took the opportunity to go. The merit badges they are offering are Fish and Wildlife Management, Nature, Energy, Nuclear Science, and Emergency Preparedness. Scouts will have prerequisites to complete before going. Please see Mr. or Mrs. Lafollete for more details.

Meeting Time at St. Paul's: 6am, leave about 6:15
Return Time to St. Paul's: About 7pm

Q. Since your Chartered Organization is the Knights of Columbus do I have to be Catholic to join Troop 494?

A. No. Troop 494 and the BSA organization are totally nondenominational. Our Charted Organization provides us with financial support when needed and a meeting place.

Q. I have a friend who was never in Cub Scouting or dropped out of Cub Scouting, can he join Troop 494?

A. Yes. Any Boy who is 11 years old can join Troop 494.

Q. My Dad or Mom was involved in my Cub Scout Den. Can they be involved as an Adult Leader in Troop 494?

A. Yes. Troop 494 encourages all parents to get involved as an Adult Leaders. Adults need to fill out an Adult Application and pay the $10.00 fee to participate in camping activities.

Q. Do I need to have my Mom or Dad with me in order to camp with Troop 494?

A. No, as long as we have enough adults camping to meet BSA’s two deep leadership requirements. We have never had this problem in the history of Troop 494 nor do we ever expect to have this problem.

Q. My son doesn't have much camping experience. Will he be able to “handle” winter camping?

A. Troop 494 will teach your son all the camping skills needed to camp 12 months out of the year safely.

Q. I’ve heard that I will need to spend a bunch of money on camping gear if I join Boy Scouts. Is this true?

A. Some additional camping gear may be needed, but we have ways of making do with gear you already have. For instance, you can double up two summer sleeping bags to use on winter campouts. Scouts and Adults are always willing to let you borrow gear that you may need.
